12 Days of Beauty Tips – Tip #3

So the holidays are over and we all survived (some better than others) – we looked and felt great for our holiday parties, but then ate and drank a wee bit too much at various celebrations, dinners and events, leaving us feeling bloated, swollen, lethargic and depressed with way too many blemishes and other skin irritations.

New Years Resolutions are just a start to getting back your mojo and of course the most popular resolution is to cleanse or detox. Some people detox for 10 days, some for 12, some for 28, 30 or even more. We recommend a detox at least twice per year.

Detoxification is a good way to ‘re-set’ or heal your liver, which in turn helps your whole entire system work more efficiently, improving your metabolism, digestive system, blood circulation, energy and stress levels and overall health.

There are many detox programs out there. Some are free and some are very expensive. We do not recommend doing extreme cleanses like the 7 day Master Cleanse. We recommend that you start by identifying all the toxic things that you have allowed in your life for so long, be it unhealthy food items, bad habits, drugs or other unhealthy vices and even negative people and relationships. The next step is to write down what you want to remove from your life, even if it is only temporarily. Share your intentions with family and friends in order to keep it real. Finally, get prepared by first cleaning out your fridge/freezer/pantry and next creating a shopping list, stocking up on the items that you need, setting a start date, creating a journal and tracking your progress. There are many apps that you can use also that can help motivate you and also help you track your progress, for example, you can check out Fat Flush to help you get started.

I start by eating real and raw. Twice a year, I remove sugar, dairy, gluten, alcohol and caffeine from my diet for thirty days, and yes, I am a world class capital B – itch for about the first five days with headaches and strange things going on in the bathroom but after getting over that hump, everything becomes more clear, and much more optimistic. My skin glows, I feel lighter on my feet, I sleep through the night and sleep more soundly, I can fit into old clothes that have been hidden in my basement for years and I am much more pleasant to be around. Another benefit to starting your detox (at least for me) is that it is not recommended to work out too hard during your detox, instead a little light exercise will do you just fine during this period.

Some things I do include in my diet are hard boiled eggs (some cleanses don’t allow eggs), homemade organic oatmeal with sliced apples, cinnamon and honey, organic miso soup, salmon, lots and lots of vegetables and salads, raw almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, legumes (all varieties of beans) and decaf green tea, just to name a few of my favorites. Juicing is another great way to get the nutrients you need while detoxing. There are so many great recipes that are easy to prepare that you could find that would adhere to the rules of a raw detox and so many resources out there for you to use for your research.

Here’s one of my favorite recipes that I prepare for dinner often whether I am detoxing or not:
Nachos Grande
a handful (typically 10-12) of organic rice or blue corn tortilla chips
2 Tbsp organic black beans
2 Tbsp dairy free shredded cheese (optional)
1 Sliced organic large tomato
1/2 cup chopped organic iceberg lettuce
1 sliced avocado
2 Tbsp organic medium spiced salsa
1 Tbsp raw chopped organic jalepeno
1 Tbsp chopped green onion
1 Tbsp chopped black olives

Sprinkle black beans, green onion, jalepeno, black olives and dairy free cheese onto the tortilla chips
Microwave on high for 1 and 1/2 minutes
Sprinkle the rest of the ingredients onto the dish and enjoy!
